"Climate Change Pinball" offers an exciting XR experience that redefines traditional pinball by weaving in climate adaptation and resilience. To win, players must navigate the consequences of environmental negligence and embrace the benefits of environmental care. This immersive game encourages global collaboration to combat climate change, challenging players to never drop the ball on the environment.

Design Process

  • Conceptualization and Research: The project commenced with a deep conceptualization phase, where the vision of creating an XR pinball experience that communicates the challenges and consequences of climate change was solidified. Extensive research into climate change and its impacts played a pivotal role in defining the experience's educational and interactive aspects.
  • Game Level Design in Unity: Once the project's direction was clear, the next step involved the creation of the entire game level within Unity. The objective was to design a dynamic, engaging, and immersive virtual world that mirrors the real-world consequences of environmental negligence.
  • Implementation of Environmental States: Environmental states were implemented within the game world to demonstrate how different factors, including deforestation, air pollution, and industrialization, adversely affect the planet. Each state introduced unique challenges for players, requiring them to tackle these environmental issues head-on during gameplay.

Environmental States

  • Deforestation: Within the game level, the state of deforestation was illustrated through visual cues and gameplay elements. Players encountered scenarios where deforestation had led to the loss of vital natural resources and landscapes. The consequences of deforestation became evident as the gameplay progressed.
  • Air Pollution: Air pollution was another key environmental state integrated into the game. Players experienced the effects of air pollution through in-game visuals and challenges. The adverse impact of pollution on the environment and climate became a central theme within the XR experience.
  • Industrialization: The state of industrialization was depicted in the game, emphasizing how rapid industrial growth can harm the environment. Industrial elements and challenges were woven into the game, creating a more immersive and educational experience.

Project Context

"Climate Change Pinball" was part of a larger initiative to explore the possibilities of volumetric imaging. It aimed to make volumetric formats accessible through software and hardware exploration. The project involved testing various methods for capturing and displaying 3D content, including 3D scanning and photogrammetry. Multiple hardware solutions were evaluated, including Intel Realsense cameras and Azure Kinect. The project also delved into volumetric video capture for immersive experiences, like "Climate Change Pinball."


Funds from the SoC grant were dedicated to exploring the most effective ways to capture and present 3D content. This included testing methods for 3D video capture and assessing commercial software options. Hardware solutions such as Intel Realsense cameras and Azure Kinect were investigated. Additionally, a custom haptic component and controller were designed for "Climate Change Pinball" to create a tangible and engaging augmented pinball board.
